Community Traffic Garden
Where Safety, Learning, and Fun Come Together
The Community Traffic Garden is a hands-on, kid-friendly space where children—and families—can safely learn the rules of the road by walking, biking, and rolling through a miniature version of a real-life street system. With intersections, crosswalks, stop signs, and even traffic signals, the garden turns safety education into a fun, active experience.
Whether it’s a pop-up event at a local park or our future permanent garden between Highland Elementary and the Clarkston Boys & Girls Club, our goal is the same:
To teach kids essential pedestrian and bicycle safety skills in a supportive, interactive environment.
What Is a Traffic Garden?
A Traffic Garden is a small-scale “street simulation” where children can practice real-world travel scenarios—without the real-world dangers. These gardens are designed to look and feel like a neighborhood street, complete with lanes, signage, and intersections. They’re ideal for teaching safe habits before kids hit the sidewalk or street on their own.
Mobile Traffic Garden
Our Mobile Traffic Garden is outfitted with balance bikes for beginners, as well as other sizes of bikes to fit any rider, scooters, an adaptive bike, and a mini police car.
Curriculum is available to teach children about:
- Proper clothing
- Helmet fitting
- Identifying traffic signs
- Checking their bike chains & tires prior to riding
- Biking on sidewalks
- Crossing streets with a bike
The Mobile Traffic Garden may be checked out for use at the Clarkston Boys & Girls Club on Highland.
Permanent Traffic Garden
The permanent Community Traffic Garden will be located at Highland Elementary in Clarkston next to the Boys & Girls Club.
We are currently raising funds, soliciting in-kind donations, and looking for volunteers to help us make this a reality.
